the home and heart of our operation.
Where the animals rest their heads.

The Herb spiral was the first garden bed constructed on site. Built with rocks and logs from the surrounding area, the reclamation from grassland to forest began. An herb spiral is a powerful addition to a garden. Perennial herbs are very hardy and pack a spiritual punch. When combined with local rocks and logs, they create a hub for beneficial insects and pollinators. Yet, our favorite thing about an herb spiral is the spice it adds to life!

Planted: rosemary, creeping rosemary, rhubarb, chives, nodding onions, yarrow, strawberries, seaberries, pink valerian, sweetgrass, sage, mint, lavender, asparagus, alfalfa

PROPERTY FEATURES

  • Stumpery

Wood is not waste! Celebrate the stumpery. Stumperies were popularized during the Victorian era out of a fascination with ferns. Stumperies invite Hügelkultur onto the property and welcome the Pacific Northwest forest floor into your garden. A shaded stumpery diversifies your growing area and provides great habitat for natives, edibles, ferns, and ornamentals that would naturally occur in such a system.

  • San CLemente Island Goats

Once, a Himalayan blackberry patch stretched across neighboring yards. Now a regenerating grassland! San Clemente Island Goat is an endangered breed, hardy land clearer, and an excellent milk source. Protected by our LGD Cerberus, guardian of goats. Hailing from San Clemente Island off the coast of San Diego, once a population of 15,000, now reduced to 1,750.

  • Rain basins - control surface water

Water is an abundant force of life, and we design with that in mind. With the seasonal influx of rain, we channel the water by changing the surface topography. Creating rain basins and building berms helps us passively irrigate our growing areas and "plant the water."

Meet the animals!

Comfrey (pictured left, top, center) holds a special place in our hearts. A super-powered plant to revive your soil and body!

We also grow hazelnuts and raspberries on the property. The hazelnut tree is an excellent choice for coppicing, as its canes can be used for firewood or trellising. We made a raspberry trellis!
