It all started with our land works. The property was originally a part of an area that used to be called the Seven Springs. There is a lot of groundwater and ephemeral stream activity. Our solution was to build an overlapping 250 ft swale system to cross the whole property above the house. We needed to overlap them in order to create pathways and areas to walk through without walking over the stairs. These swales carry the rainfall/flood water around the house to future planting sites, as well as create a planting area on the swale, which is passively irrigated

On the lower half of the property, we turned 2/3 acre sloped field into 4 terraces, a row of existing orchard trees, our largest field will be home to a gary oak ecosystem and nut crop trees, and an access road

ABOUT

Developing best practices

We have been converting grass lawns and neglected space for quite some time; it takes a lot of hard work from us and the stewards. Home to a family of four, there is a lot of action underway here. The beginnings of a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) farm, our stewards with a background in acupuncture and learning to grow the very medicines they’ve come to know. An exciting conjunction between TCM and farming in Washington, many are cold tolerant coming from mountainous land, and many are potentially toxic to deer, thus avoided. We will let you know what we are growing soon.

At the entry way of the PROPERTY, we are converting a grass space and old apple trees into a meandering trail through trellised beds, which will soon be under a canopy of apples, figs, olives, pacific madrones and more
