A space to commune with family and friends, and Mother Nature. This sunken fire pit was Ken's and my brainchild to fill a hard-to-reach sinkhole behind his bulkhead. We focus on working with intention. If the norm is a waste of time and money, then we come up with something else, like a sunken fire pit with a base of oyster shell and white rock, balanced with dark Yakisugi. The cherry on top, a welded fire pit, mirroring the dimensions of the seating area itself. We turned it around to complete the balance of Yin and Yang in our design.
ABOUT
Yakisugi & wabi-sabi
Yakisugi is a Japanese woodworking preservation technique. It can be left alone or oiled; either way, the finished product is beautiful and stands the test of time. It is safe to mingle with, free of harsh chemicals/paints/stains the final product is clean and green. Built with naturally rot-resistant Juniper timbers, we created a small retaining wall that effortlessly molds with the environment. The bench brings together Douglas Fir and Cedar, big enough to seat a party and peaceful enough to burn one down with a partner. Intention is everything in our design.
Wabi-sabi can mean the art of accepting imperfection and impermanence. As well as appreciating natural elements and the aging of time. This ties in excellently with our Yakisugi, where we intentionally leave some pieces more burned than others if they aren’t to be used by people. Yakisugi ages with time and can change from dark brown to silver and back again, given the weather. Invite Wabisabi into your life and begin to see more beauty in this world. We would love to teach you about both Yakisugi and Wabi-sabi.
welding
Our resident welder is an expert at making handrails and fences but every once in a while, we get to put them to use on something magical. Built onsite this fire pit was proportioned to the same dimensional ratios of the sunken firepit. This was to create some balance to the opening we created on this sloping hillside. Designing with an intentional balance in mind is key to creating an authentic space that creates a connection to our natural world.
